These shorts are made of 100% natural cotton by fair trade artisans in India that use the artisanal technique of ikat dyeing. Farmers grow the natural (no chemicals used) cotton in the nearby state where medium-sized farmers and mills do the block printing. Not only are no chemicals used but the material goes through a 100% eco process of bleaching and softening. Then it's pre-treated with the fruit myrobalan so that the dyes will penetrate the fabric. All of the colors are natural and plant-based and include ingredients like sugar and pomegranate. The artisans then, using a hand-carved block featuring the desired design, dip the block in the dye. Artisans stamp the design onto the fabric from left to right and bottom to top until the entire piece is complete. They then clean the material in a flowing river or freshwater pond.
The dried fabric is then boiled in copper vessels using leaves, roots, barks, and flowers to create the desired color. It is rewashed and hung to dry in the sun. Starch is made with rice and applied to the material to fix the dyes. The fabric is then washed with soap, dried in the sun and pressed and folded. Now it's ready to be cut and stitched by fair trade artisans.
Cotton is India's number one export. By supporting and buying India grown cotton, farmers can continue to have a sustainable business, and it also helps support the economy. Passion Lilie is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and is a Green America certified business.
